Progress on This and That

It may not be summer yet; however, I am on a summer schedule and have not been working on my goals.   I have been busy with family events and gardening. This week I finally have some sewing/quilting progress to share.

Wednesday church quilt group met. We had enough churn dash blocks of various sizes completed to plan a layout. We decided to only add 3” blocks to fill in and then add a border to make it a good comfort quilt size.

It was inspired by a quilt called "Bohemian Charm" in the February 2008 issue of "American Patchwork and Quilting".

We presented a quilt to Pastor John Cook who has been at my church 20 years and will leave on sabbatical in a few days.   We used the enlarged version of the "Have Faith" quilt.

My older granddaughter broke her leg and will be in a cast all summer. I made her a lounge pillow so she could be more comfortable sitting in bed. I made a couple years ago, but this pattern (McCalls 4123) is better even though more complicated. Here is the inner pillow stuffed.

The outer covering can be removed and washed. It has pockets on the arms for small items like a tv remote or cell phone.

Last week I finished piecing another set of Colorworks blocks. This time in a rainbow setting. Here the blocks are laid out for piecing the quilt top.  The flame fabric was leftover from a quilt made about 13 years ago.

My DIL enjoys decorating the house for holidays so I pieced 4 patriotic placemats for July. Hope to get them quilted in a few days.

Keeping track of stash fabric- Used 2 yds for the inner pillow

and bought 2 yds to use for the outer pillow.

Used about 2 ¾ yds for the patriotic placemats (including binding when quilted.

Progress – Not Much

Working on my goals for the week really did not happen at all and may not happen this week either, partly because I will spend time with my GD with a broken leg.  She has a full leg cast which is very heavy to lift. Maybe she will let me share a photo later.

When I found a few minutes to sew, I pieced more churn dash blocks in multiple sizes. Here are some small ones.

They are all from stash fabric but I did not try to estimate how much was used.

I kept up with Pat Sloan's “Home Is” mystery.  Below is a photo of the newest section. We only have 2 more blocks to make. I am loving it.

Goals for week of May 17th - (same as last week)

1. Piece “Seeing Stars” top.

2. Piece blocks with some scraps/crumbs.

3 Record stash fabric used or added.

4. Clean and organize a drawer.

Gardening and Goals

Sewing took a backseat to spring gardening this past week. It was such beautiful weather and a perfect time to work outside before it gets too hot. I worked in flower beds as well as the vegetable garden most mornings. Here are a few blooms to enjoy.

I pruned this old dogwood (with help) hoping to save it.

In the afternoon I did a little sewing. I made one mug rug and kept up with Pat Sloan's “Home Is” mystery. Only a few more weeks to go.  Two thirds pieced.  It has been a lot of fun.

The HSTs on my goals are for a UFO. Instead of making progress on a different UFO, I simply cut and sewed HSTs.

How I did last week-

1. Make progress on a UFO. Done. Only as part of goal 2.

2. Piece some HST blocks leader/ender. Done. As leader/ender while sewing the mug rug and making my “Home Is” block for the week.

3 Record stash fabric used or added. 0.25 used 0 added

4. Clean and organize a drawer. Not done

This week I have a couple of appointments that will keep me from sewing or gardening those days. Wednesday is sew day for church quilt ministry. We are working on scrappy churn dash blocks in multiple sizes. My goals during the summer will change as I hope to spend time with GDs.

Goals for week of May 10th -

1. Piece “Seeing Stars” top.

2. Piece blocks with some scraps/crumbs.

3 Record stash fabric used or added.

4. Clean and organize a drawer.

Hands2Help 2021 Check-In

I have 2 finishes especially for the Hands2Help challenge and they have been mailed to organizations.

I was inspired by Covered in Love's “Winter Blues” block drive design and pulled all my green units to create what I call “Spring Greens”. I enjoyed playing with the squares and rectangles to create a variety of blocks. I added a scrappy border to pull all the blocks together.

FM swirls was quilted over all.

Next I pieced a stacked squares rainbow design, used a soft flannel for the back and lofty polyester batting for a very snuggle worthy kids quilt for Little Lambs Foundation for Kids. This was truly a fast quilt-in-a day project.

Seeing all the wonderful scrappy quilts is so inspiring that many more scrappy comfort quilts are on my project list.

Thanks to Sarah for organizing the inspiration and sharing of comfort quilts.

Week in Review and Goals

Last week was busy but fabulous. The weather was gorgeous and my yard and garden got some attention. One enjoyable morning was spent at church for our quilt ministry.

The most fun day in a long time was Friday. I needed to make a road trip to Augusta, GA to pick up my machine after service so I invited a friend. It was the first such trip in over a year and the wonderful part, we discovered a new quilt shop called Country Barn Quilt Co. It was so fun to look at the fabric in person and I just had to buy some.

I made the block 17 for Pat Sloan's “Home Is” mystery and then was able to sew part 2 together so 2/3's of the quilt is finished. I am very pleased so far.

How I did last week-

1. Finish May wedding quilt. Done. I shared a photo on Friday's post.

2. Finish quilt for H2H 2021. Done. This was my second for this year. I also shared a photo of it on Friday's post. This week I plan to get them in the mail.

3. Record stash fabric used or added. Used: 0.25 yd Added: 2 yards

4. Clean and organize a drawer. Done. I chose what I thought would be an easy drawer of odds and ends. A few things were put in the giveaway box and I spent a few minutes reading diary entries from when I was a teenager. My diaries need to disappear permanently because I don't want anyone else to read them.

Goals for the week of May 3rd -

1. Make progress on a UFO.

2. Piece some HST blocks leader/ender.

3 Record stash fabric used or added.

4. Clean and organize a drawer.
