Finished QOV Top

I started my week out with piecing and sewing the center together for my Winter Quilt of Valor quilt along from Alycia. Then I enjoyed a short visit by my sister Irene

and quilt projects were paused for a few days. After a her visit I added the borders for a finished top. I love the design and it was quick and easy thanks to Alycia

I'm linking up with Alycia's Finished or Not Friday.  Check out what others are creating.

Project Progress

I have been trying to keep up with Alycia's QOV Winter Quilt Along and doing okay. Week 5 was to piece the center. All my units have been pieced but I have not pieced them together to form the center.

For International Quilting Day I wanted some simple piecing so pulled from my stash of 2 ½” x 4 ½ “ brick units of blue and green to make potato chip blocks for a comfort quilt. I made half of the blocks with dark center and light ring. The blocks with a light center are only half sewn. I need to pull more lights. I hope you worked on a fun project to celebrate the day.

Distractions and a Finish

The past week my quilting time was spent on a couple unplanned projects. I pulled a box of gifted old 1” finished squares. They were leftover from a Trip Around the World that she had hand pieced. I decided that I would challenge myself to make a small Trip Around the World before I would pass them on. I pieced a wall-hanging 19” by 23” and FM quilted with variegated thread.  I made a two color (faux flange) binding.

*Update*  I finished the binding.

Last Wednesday at church quilt group we received a request for a set of placemats to be auctioned for the Family Promise fundraiser. After church I pulled fabric and cut enough for a set of 8 using Jordan Fabrics free Courthouse Steps pattern. There is also a video tutorial on YouTube.  I made one block as a sample.

We have had a few days of springlike beautiful weather. My son helped me work one day to get the vegetable garden ready for planting. I'm looking forward to more pretty weather even though I will not get as much quilting done.

Progress on Several Projects

I have a quilt sandwich waiting for quilting. Instead of quilting it, I pulled several other UFOs to work on.   I made 6 red stars for week 2 assignment for Alycia's QOV Quilt Along and cut the strips needed for week 3.

Then I used my scrap system of 3 ½ “ by 6 ½ “ pieces to create the border for the Scrap Dance Waltz. I found a great fabric in my stash for the backing so that is also ready for the next step.

I also pulled fabric and pieced a backing for the Broken Lemoyne stars top. This week I hope to get both sandwiched for quilting.

I recently read The Quilt Walk by Sandra Dallas. (I read the digital copy through Libby.) I really enjoyed it even though classified as a Juvenile chapter book of about 200 pages. It is about a 10 year old girl, her caring family and quilting. The story is based on a real family's wagon train journey west to Golden, Colorado in 1863. I recommend it especially for a quilter and her daughter or granddaughter about age 9 to 12.

QOV Top Finished

Last week I added borders to the Scrappy QOV for a finished top and I also made the binding. I plan to take it to my sister's QOV group to finish and present.  I'm very happy I was able to use those orphan units and all stash fabric.

I finished the week 1 assignment for Alycia's QOV Quilt Along Sunday afternoon and should be able to get week 2 done soon.

My guild has also started a QOV Mystery I hope to start; however, it looks a lot more complicated.

I am excited with progress toward my quilting goals for this year. I have finished 9, many of which were UFOs, and made progress on a few others. I have used only stash fabric so far. I hope to use more of my scraps in coming months. I am looking for more creative ways to use my scraps for quilting projects.
