Rainbow Star pattern
46” by 56”
This pattern makes units
for 2 giant stars at once with the HST technique.
You can make more
efficient use of your background fabric for these large blocks if it is at
least 44” wide.
Requires about 2 yds.
Cut 8 light background
11” squares for 2 quilts.
Also: cut 5 WOF strips 5 ½” wide and
cut 8 squares 10 ½”.
For the HSTs:
Cut 2 sets of 11” squares
from each of 8 colors:
dk red, red, gold, green,
lt blue, dk blue,
lt purple and dk purple.
Draw a diagonal line on
the back of the light squares.
Then place each background
square on one of each colored square.
Sew ¼” on both sides of
the diagonal line.
Cut on the line to form 2
HST squares – one for each of 2 quilts.
Square up to 10 ½”
For center of star:
Pair up the following squares - Red / gold
Green / lt blue
Dk blue
/ purple lt Purple / dk red
Draw a diagonal line on
the back of the lighter fabric square.
Sew ¼” on both sides of
the diagonal line.
Cut on the line to form 2
HST squares – one for each of 2 quilts. Square up to 10 ½”
Layout units as pictured
in the drawing and sew together in rows.
Add top and bottom
background 5 ½” strips.
For border: cut multiple 3
½” X 8 ½” units from each color to be pieced for the border.
Sew sets of 5 units for
the top and bottom border. Sew sets of 7
units for the side borders.
I think this design would
also be beautiful and interesting with fewer colors or a different color
palette.
